Martin Péronnet, “Monaco’s digital development is a factor of attractiveness”

Monaco Telecom, the host operator, provides mobile telephony, landline telephony, Internet and television services in the Principality. As of last June, the company is offering the DC3 hyper-efficient Data Center, in addition to the existing 130 bay data hosting capacity. Meet the Managing Director, Martin Péronnet.

Your news: the opening of DC3, a 1000 m2 Data Center in Fontvieille.
What is DC3 made up of?

DC3 has a 220 bay hosting capacity. It benefits from the connectivity of Monaco, the landing point of the Europe India Gateway underwater cable, which is linked by the leading global carriers (Level3, Vodafone, Tata) that interconnect with local operators. With the Europe India Gateway, Monaco now appears on the big map of global networks.

This highly sophisticated installation offers several levels of physical security, high density electrical configurations and duplication of technical infrastructures, ensuring high availability 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days per year.

We have invested over €5 million to achieve this level of safety performance: double identification security lock, 2 electric inlets in the building, 2 redundant installations, 2 different inverter chains, 2 generators to recharge all necessary energy, connected to a 6000 litre tank. Energy independence is thus guaranteed, as well as temperature maintenance. DC3 falls within an eco-responsible approach with this contained cold corridor cooling system.
I would emphasise that DC3 was entirely built by Monegasque companies and in partnership with international equipment manufacturers.

For what type of customers is the data center intended?

For Monaco’s businesses and administrations (government, public health): the Centre Cardio- thoracique and the Société Monégasque de l’Electricité et du Gaz use it already. It enables them to contract out confidently all or part of their servers, with the guarantee that their data will remain in Monaco. We worked on the idea of proximity to provide an immediate response to the increasingly pressing professional safeguarding needs.

DC3 is not only for Monegasque enterprises but also more broadly for regional and international enterprises seeking a highly secure place in which to protect their data. Moreover, we have business development teams abroad. Beyond the quality of the Data Center, the themes developed with the countries of Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia are Monaco’s stability and security and the country’s neutrality.

What about banks?

In the past, banks kept their data in-house, within their own walls. But gaining internally the level of security now required by the regulations has become very complex and very costly. We designed a space such that banks can have their own room and integrate their own access control system into it. We can build a room in a few weeks, and for financial institutions I believe this is really the optimal data hosting solution.

Is this type of structure important for Monaco?

It is a huge factor of attractiveness and a matter of national importance. Data security issues have very serious consequences. This type of Data Center is a strategic investment for the digital development of Monaco. The important thing for a country is the quality of its network and hosting infrastructure. Monaco is increasingly connected. The creation of DC3 strengthens the performance of Monaco’s telecommunications platform, which is based on digital infrastructure as is the case in Luxembourg and Singapore.
